Homeless Connect Day: A One-Stop Shop*

Imagine for a moment that you are experiencing homelessness.

You don’t have a car. You don’t have an ID, birth certificate, or social security card—all three of which are necessary to be eligible for assistance. What’s more, you don’t have the $45 needed for a California State ID. You’ve lost your phone. Your CalFresh benefits are up for renewal. And you need to see a clinician soon for important medical care.

Every one of these tasks requires transportation, time, coordination, and energy. That might mean multiple long bus rides or long walks without a reliable way to look up directions. It could mean standing in line without having eaten. It could mean worrying about where your belongings are while you’re inside an office.

Completing these tasks separately can take days—sometimes even weeks. And unfortunately, there is no single place where someone can access all of these resources at once.

Meeting participants where they are

That’s why LA Family Housing’s Regional Coordination Team created Homeless Connect Day.

Homeless Connect Day is a monthly event where service providers such as the Department of Motor Vehicles, Social Security Administration, and many other partners come directly to our sites and local parks to meet participants where they are. The goal is simple: bring as many essential services as possible into one space so people can access the resources they need for their journey toward stability.

What started as a small effort has grown significantly in recent years. Early events welcomed around 50 participants, but today Homeless Connect Day serves up to 200 participants a month, with more than 40 service providers coming together to offer critical support.

“If you want to know what it’s like to be homeless, walk to every table and every vendor at the Homeless Connect. See the resources they bring and the hope they bring to participants, and you'll understand exactly what it takes for people to navigate their experience of homelessness,” says
Everett Taylor, Director of Regional Coordination

While document assistance is a core focus of the event, the LAFH team also strives to create a sense of dignity and normalcy. By bringing services together in one location, we eliminate transportation barriers, reduce the time burden, and remove some of the intimidation that often comes with navigating complex systems.

Services include:

  • DMV providing free ID services

  • LA County Department of Public Social Services support for General Relief, CalFresh, and Medi-Cal renewal and enrollment

  • Free smartphones and service

  • On-site medical and mental health providers

  • Clothing and pet supply donations, hot food, coffee, and basic essentials

  • Free haircuts and hygiene support

  • Housing resources and unit acquisition services

“I would say the biggest impact this event has in our community is that it's extremely low barrier. You can just walk right in and receive any of our services. It's a one-stop shop. So often unhoused members of our community have to go to many different locations to receive services, like driving to the DMV. We bring all of that together so they can spend an hour or two here and receive everything they may need in one place,” says Emily Moore, CES Regional Systems Manager at LA Family Housing

The best part? This event operates with no dedicated budget.

All services and resources are provided at no cost, and everything distributed is donated by members of our local community.

“We're all collaborating together, and it's just a great opportunity for people to show what the world needs more of today: kindness, humanity, and hope,” says Charles Richardson, retired LAFH employee and volunteer

Homeless Connect Day reminds us that ending homelessness is not the work of one organization alone. It is a shared mission that requires all of us.

Every volunteer, every donation, and every service provided brings us one step closer to a future where everyone has a place to call home.

When we remove barriers and bring systems together in one room, we create opportunity. And most importantly—we create hope.
